The economy is still as cold as the Cuyahoga River in December. So is the travel industry. The silver lining, at least for those who still have a little disposable income: great travel deals.

The online travel site Hotels.com reports that the average price of a hotel room in the United States fell by 17 percent during the first half of the year. The company calls 2009 "definitely the year of the travel deal."

"Right now, I think almost any place has fantastic bargains," agreed Dave Matthews of Prime Tours in Dublin.

In fact, the deals are so good that travelers should consider destinations a little farther from home, Matthews said.

"The dollar is weak, but that's more than

offset by low winter airfares and hotel deals in Europe," he said.

Hotel room prices in London, Copenhagen, Zurich, Rome, Cannes, Venice and Geneva are all down by more than 20 percent, according to Hotels.com.
